Flower painting books can be arranged in many different ways, but a seasonal approach makes a lot of sense. You’ll have not just the availability of specimens, but also the colour palette that’s suitable for the now.

Also new is Sandrine’s introduction to her ethical studio. As we become more environmentally aware, the source of materials becomes a concern, as may their composition if you are following the increasingly popular practice of veganism. Although this point is not laboured, it’s a worthy inclusion in this exciting book.

Sandrine begins by explaining working methods, including colour mixing, hues, light and shade, washes and drybrush. Starting the demonstrations in Spring brings the bright colours of flowers such as daffodils and tulips, and techniques that include shadows and under-layers.

For each season there are three projects which develop your skills through progressive levels, with consideration given to colour palettes, drawing and the inclusion of details. Autumn brings fruit as well as the changing colours of leaves, while Winter adds houseplants, evergreens and the textures of bark and berries.

This is an informative and enjoyable book that offers a progressive course in botanical painting.
